Savings Bond Value Generator  Becoming Software

The easy way to update the values of your EE and I U.S. Savings Bonds in Quicken

This program reads Savings Bonds Value Files released by the U.S. Treasury, and generates very differently formatted CSV files that can be used to update EE and I series Savings Bond values in Quicken. This program is Freeware, and you agree to the agreement by using it.

IMPORTANT: These files will ONLY work if your Savings Bonds are set up as securities in Quicken in a very particular way, which is not the normal way suggested by Quicken. The setup for the bonds is the same as used by my old EEBVE program. Savings Bond setup instructions for SBVG are here.

Download the Program, then unzip the download and move the files wherever you want on your PC.

This program requires no installation, and is designed to run on Windows 10 or 11. It may run in other Windows environments, if you can provide any Python depenancies it needs.

To use the program:
- Run sbvg.exe on your PC
- Navigate using the open file dialog that comes up, to the Treasury value file you want to convert (a 5 year file, SavBondVal_v2_202006_202505.csv is currently included)
- When processing is complete a message will popup, click OK
- Open the Import Prices dialog in Quicken and paste (ctrl-v) in the file name, which sbvg placed in your clipboard

Note: In the version of Quicken I use, the Import Prices option is available in the File Menu only when in Portfolio View. How to Import Prices can change between Quicken versions. If your Quicken does not support importing prices, you can't use this. If you are having problems finding or using Import Prices, you might try finding information on the Quicken website, though search engines, or by asking an AI.

The U.S. Treasury file I currenly include contains value information from June 2020 through May 2025. The Treasury will issue new files every six months, and also provides files going back further if desired. It is up to you to download whatever further files you need from the Treasury website, currently: https://fiscaldata.treasury.gov/datasets/savings-bond-value-files/savings-bonds-value-files
